Travellers visiting Voss will sooner or later have their eyes drawn south towards the line of snowy mountains overlooking Vangsvatnet. This beautiful line of mountains hints at what contrasts the wild nature around Voss has to offer: harsh mountains with eternal snow, framed by forested hills, bubbling streams and old, charming mountain farms.
On this trip we explore these contrasts, enjoing a round trip that also gives us a superb view of Voss and its surroundings. We follow a path rarely used towards Gråsidetoppen, 1307 metres above sea level. On our way down we visit the inviting, self-catered cabin called Roset. If you are looking for a varied, beatiful and demanding trip through the Voss mountains, this is it!
We start from Hindartveit, a small, idyllic farm in the forested hills overlooking Voss. Following a gravel road towards Smågiljane, we gradually weave our way into the lush mountain forest. Pathfinding is difficult in this area, so trusting local expertise is crucial. We gain the terrain feature known as Rapjahalsen and continue up into Ulvaskaret («wolf’s col»). From here, a wild mountain scenery of snow patches, lakes and rock opens up in front of us. It is not uncommon to observe wild animals such as reindeer in this area. We now head east across Gråsidetoppen (1307), taking in the marvellous view of our surroundings. From our elevated position, Voss appears small, nestled between big mountains. Further east we gain the marked path towards the lovely self-catered cabin at Roset. After a rest, we follow the path back down to our cars.
