Moldbakken mountain farm

This is a short, guided hike where you’ll learn about the ancient tradition of mountain farming. Escape the crowds and enjoy peace and tranquility in beatiful natural surroundings.

Voss has more than 300 mountain farms. Today, only a few are still being run. Old paths and man-made structures are slowly reclaimed and erased by nature. By joining one of our guided trips to Moldbakken, you will learn about a cultural heritage that is close to 4000 years old.

Trip outline

Starting from the lovely, refurbished farm called Staup, we follow the old path up the hills towards the mountain farm called Moldbakken. The path is mostly good, with just a few wet spots. We ascend a couple of steeper sections, but this is generally an easy route to follow. On the way we stop to admire the river called Moldåni, with its famous potholes. At Moldbakken, we enjoy the views and treat ourselves with a light meal of traditional, locally produced food. We head back towards Staup, retracing our steps. This round trip typically takes 3-4 hours.

Reasons to go

This trip is relatively short, which means it fits in with most schedules. This is also a family friendly trip. The path follows a traditional route, where you can expect to learn about the local culture and meet some farm animals, too. After the trip, you’ll get the chance to purchase some of the food we tasted at a nearby farm.
